With all the information out there constantly vying for your attention, it is good to take a break and do a media fast once in a while. This can mean unplugging the computer, TV, cell phone or whatever gadget you happen to be addicted to.
For me, it means unplugging almost all Sundays (and sometimes Saturday). It means spending some extra quality time with the family playing a game or reading together. It means catching up on my knitting lessons or even taking a nap. I turn off my laptop and put it away so I’m not tempted to jump on Twitter or Facebook “for a second” and just focus on being.
When I first decided to do this, it was HARD. I didn’t want to “miss anything” and I didn’t like the idea of having all this time with “nothing to do.” Now I relish the time I have to just be and have the freedom and space to breathe. I like the quietness and peace of the TV and computer being off. I love the extra time I get to cuddle and focus on my little guy and husband.
Now, I confess, I do watch some TV on Sundays and Saturdays, but usually only in the evenings if there’s something uplifting or fun that catches my eye – no news, no commentaries.
I find that by unplugging for one day each week, I revitalized, refreshed, and ready to face the adventures of the week ahead.
How about you? Do you (or have you ever taken) do a media fast on a regular basis? What does that mean to you? How long is it for? What are your challenges and what are your rewards of unplugging periodically? Do share!
